WHAT IS EXTENDED REALITY?

Extended Reality (XR) is a combination of human and computer-generated graphical interaction that is actually a virtual environment. In basic terms, the extended reality is a superset of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). By bringing it all together, XR can reveal a wide new spectrum of opportunities across real and virtual environments. To understand better what extended reality is, let's start by looking at the definition of the three components we mentioned.

 

1.    Augmented Reality: Augmented reality does not put us in any virtual or computer-generated graphics, rather it just creates a sense of illusion in digital gadgets. Users still have access to the real world and can fully interact in both dimensions. One example of augmented reality is the filters that we see in many applications, they only create the illusion that they are there, but they are not.

 

2.    Virtual Reality: It is a 3D environment completely created using computer technology where users can fully immerse themselves in a simulated reality using dedicated headsets, haptic touch, and even environmental feedback. VR is able tocan generate realistic images and sounds that engage the user's five senses in the virtual world, similar to real life.

 

3.    Mixed Reality: Mixed reality is a combination of AR and VR where you can interact with the digital and real world at the same time. Users can visualize their surroundings in special MR devices. For example, deploying an MR device will give you a view of your entire surroundings. You can do whatever you want, throw the ball, close the windows, etc. which will be digitally in your MR headset, but in reality, things will stay as they are.

 

 

                       


 

APPLICATIONS OF EXTENDED REALITY:

1.    Sales: Companies can promote their product through XR and can give their users an experience of their products. This can be beneficial because companies will have to spend less on their advertising.

2.    Real Estate: Suitable housing can be easily found with a short guide using XR, and owners can also find potential buyers from various other locations, as there will be no need to physically browse. The role of brokers would be eradicated in such a scenario.

3.    Education: The use of XR can benefit the industry. Students all over the world can find and choose the right universities and study in their location. Anyone could use this technology to study at any institution around the world.

4.    Work from Home in Remote Areas: Employees can imagine the living environment of their office or workplace and can participate in meetings from their homes and also instruct others how to work from their homes. Especially when the area is remote and difficult to work with, XR can be used so work can be done from home.

 

CHALLENGES OF EXTENDED REALITY:

1.    Cost: Since XR is a relatively new form of technology, there may be higher initial development and equipment costs compared to other traditional technologies. Developing compelling content for XR users, for example, requires time and support from developers involved in the technology, while users must seek out interfaces such as VR headsets and motion sensors.

2.    User Experience: Experts say that in one day users can use VR headsets for 10-11 hours a day. However, users still experience some health problems from using these headsets for shorter periods, including motion sickness, eye strain, and headaches.

3.    Hardware Issues: The interfaces needed to access advanced technologies, devices, and interfaces, still face several challenges in accurately displaying visuals. Improvements can be expected as adjacent technologies such as 5G and edge computing also see progress, helping the XR to become increasingly complex.

USES OF EXTENDED REALITY:

1.    Entertainment: The immersive experiences enabled by XR open up the opportunity for music, sports, and, other entertainment events to become even more engaging and immersive, while fans can access an endless catalog of events from the comfort of their own home using a VR headset.

2.    Health Care: XR technology can offer better analytics for medical industry professionals and offers training opportunities for surgery, diagnosis, and treatment.

3.    Tourism: Prospective travelers can view sites and infrastructure such as landmarks and hotels before committing to purchase tickets to their preferred destination.

FUTURE SCOPE:

A recent survey revealed that more than a whopping 60 percent of respondents believe that Extended Reality will become mainstream within just the next five years. This shows how quickly this technology is developing and how readily the public is ready to accept it once it is ready and available on the market.

Indeed, Extended Reality has many uses and could be used in all kinds of fields such as retail, real estate, marketing, training, entertainment, and more.
